Flight attendants aren’t just experts at air travel; their expertise also extends to hotels. After all, the job frequently includes overnight stays in different cities. Naturally, we were interested when we noticed flight attendants were posting hotel hacks on social media. We’ve got to say, some of these ideas are pure genius.
Use a hanger to keep the curtains closed

There are few things more annoying than bright sunlight streaming through your window when you’re trying to sleep. Fortunately, flight attendants like Esther Sturrus (@estersturrus) and Danielle (@danidboyy) shared the same solution on TikTok and Instagram. Simply grab a hanger or two out of the closet, and use the clips to bring the curtains together.
Put a shoe in the safe
The hanger tip wasn’t the only tip offered by both flight attendants. The travel pros also recommended putting a single shoe in the hotel safe. While this might seem perplexing at first, the reason makes perfect sense. You’re not likely to leave behind valuables like jewelry or your passport if it means walking out the door with a missing shoe.
Use the television as a phone charger
No wall adapter? No problem! If you need a place to charge your phone or other devices, Sturrus recommends using the USB port on the television.

Those hotel shower caps aren’t just for bathing; flight attendants have found clever ways to use them. Since they’re clear and stretchy, Sturrus recommends placing your dirty shoes inside them before you pack them in your suitcase with your nice, clean clothes. Both flight attendants recommend wrapping the remote control inside a shower cap to prevent your fingers from coming into contact with germs and bacteria.
Swap out your room key to keep the electricity on

If your hotel requires you to put your room key in a special slot to keep the lights on, Sturrus recommends swapping it out with a different card. An old key card from a different hotel would be an excellent choice.
Head to the fitness center for free water
Danielle says you don’t have to pay for the overpriced water in your hotel room. Head to the fitness center, where you’ll usually find a dispenser where you can fill a reusable bottle for free.

When Danielle leaves her room, she positions the “Do not Disturb” sign between the door and the door frame. If it’s moved, she knows there’s a strong likelihood someone has been in her room while she was gone.
