Summary

With the launch of Season 3, NetEase Games made improvements to its system to better detact smurfs. NetEase Games' system is issuing warnings to suspected smurf accounts to stop the behavior. One player banned for smurfing in Marvel Rivals was unfairly penalized due to de-ranking from previous seasons.

Marvel Rivals has started to issue season-long bans to people who are found to be smurfing in the popular hero shooter, but it seems this recent wave of bans has caused some unintended issues for people who aren't guilty of breaking the rules as well. NetEase Games recently added the mutant Jean Grey to Marvel Rivals as the Duelist Phoenix, exciting many fans who have been eagerly awaiting the arrival of more X-Men.

Season 3 of Marvel Rivals launched with quite a few adjustments and new features, though not all of them were announced ahead of time. It was recently discovered that NetEase Games has updated its system to flag the accounts of players suspected of smurfing, which is when a high-ranked player creates a new account just to face off against people in lower ranks. It's an issue that can suck the fun out of the game for some players. Thanks to the new system, it was recently revealed that players suspected of smurfing were being issued warnings to stop the behavior or face further consequences.

In a recent post on Reddit, poorF2Pnoob claimed that they've been banned from participating in Competitive play for the rest of the season. The player stated that they hadn't played the game since Season 1. At the start of every season, players lose several ranks and have to work their way back up. Well, since Season 1, poorF2Pnoob has lost quite a few ranks. So, when they started to play again in Season 3, they were hit with a warning for smurfing in Marvel Rivals. After that, they were suspended for a brief period of time. Unfortunately, that suspension then turned into a season-long ban. The player appears understandably frustrated, as the issue seems to be baked into the way the game handles de-ranking people at the start of a season.

Marvel Rivals May Be Banning Innocent Players

While poorF2Pnoob claims to have reached out to support, they said that customer service hasn't been able to help them at all. Some people pointed out that the message poorF2Pnoob received says that, in addition to being banned from Competitive play in Marvel Rivals, their rank will be reset at the start of next season. These people were curious as to how that might help, as resetting the rank of a highly skilled player could cause them to be flagged for smurfing again. It seems as if poorF2Pnoob's experience isn't completely unique, as other players have complained about receiving similar bans.
