Someone Rescued The Chevy Suburban From Dante’s PeakPeople are shocked to learn many movie cars, like the Chevy Suburban from Dante’s Peak, are discarded after filming. To fans of films, as well as TV shows, the vehicles are often viewed as some sort of treasure. But studios often seen them as financial burdens they’re happy to be rid of.
This UPS delivery truck has been modified to drift.
After filming wrapped for Dante’s Peak, someone purchased the Suburban off Universal Studios and it’s whereabouts were a mystery until it popped up on eBay about a decade ago. That’s when a salvage yard owner purchased the Chevy, then he hid it away as well.
But the Suburban was recently acquired by YouTube channel Greg’s Restorations, which if the name isn’t an indication, with the aim to restore it to its former glory. The guy behind the channel buys a lot of old movie cars and restores them, which is a pretty fun thing to witness.
The vehicle is a 1987 Chevy Suburban that was modified with a front-mounted Warn winch, grille guard with auxiliary lights, KC lights on the roof, snorkel, rear spare tire rack, 33-inch tires, lift, and roof basket.
You can tell Greg was a little apprehensive right before checking out the Suburban. Not only is there a risk that the thing wasn’t genuine, he had no real idea what kind of condition it was in. Thankfully, the Chevy was in one piece and those modifications made for the movie were still installed.
Sure, the thing is dusty and has some damage here and there. Plus, the rockers are pretty rusty. It also doesn’t run, but the thing is a true barn find.
In case you don’t recall, Dante’s Peak came out in 1997 and starred Pierce Brosnan and Linda Hamilton. It was about a volcanologist played by Brosnan who drove the modified Chevy Suburban as he tried rescuing people living in a town by a dormant volcano that was about to blow.
