Dodge Demon 170 Throws Down Against A Challenger Super Stock

Drag races can result in some pretty interesting matchups, like this Dodge Demon 170 and Challenger Super Stock. Both are faster than your average Challenger and were the pinnacle of Mopar muscle cars when they were released.

Watch American muscle cars take on Teslas on the dragstrip.

The Super Stock is an impressive ride many have likened to the Dodge Demon (not the 170). The supercharged 6.2-liter Hemi V8 is tuned to produce 807-horsepower and 707 lb.-ft. of torque. It can blast from 0 to 60 mph in under four seconds and does the quarter mile in a respectable 11.4 seconds at 129.4 mph.

But on paper, the Demon 170 is far superior. The supercharged 6.2-liter Hemi V8 has 1,025-hp and 945 lb.-ft. of torque on tap. According to Dodge, it can do 0 to 60 mph in a scorching 1.66 seconds, pull 2.004 Gs while accelerating, and can blast down the quarter mile in 8.91 seconds at 151.17 mph.

That last spec is the most relevant to this drag race for obvious reasons. However, there are other factors beyond factory spec sheets.

Driver experience and capability are huge, so are the tires, how well each muscle car has been maintained, and if either one has been modified beyond the factory equipment. Before the race stars, we don’t know all that, although the Super Stock seems to have some obvious mods like the hood.

Watching the race, it immediately becomes obvious that aftermarket hood is hiding some big changes done to the Super Stock. It hooks up and goes, the Demon 170 never getting even close to its Mopar sibling.

The Super Stock polishes off the quarter mile run in 8.44 seconds at 161.05 mph, the Demon 170 doing it in 9.85 at 143.75 mph. This just proves drag races are about more than factory spec sheets, and we love it.
