A new rumor suggests that developer Retro Studios will be moving on to start development on Metroid Prime 5 soon, which is an exciting tease considering Metroid Prime 4: Beyond has yet to be released. The Metroid action-adventure series began back in 1986 with Nintendo at the helm, following bounty hunter Samus Aran, who fights on behalf of the galaxy against Space Pirates. The IP has released 11 main games, 12 including the upcoming Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, and plenty of spin-off titles, such as Metroid Prime Pinball.
Metroid Prime 4 was officially announced at E3 2017, and sees the return of Samus using psychic powers on the planet Viewros against rival bounty hunter Sylux. With only a 2025 window to go by, predictions are rolling in for Metroid Prime 4: Beyond’s release date, and October is likely not the month to avoid Pokemon Legends: Z-A, which is also in Nintendo’s catalog. The Metroid title is confirmed to be launching on both the original Switch and the Nintendo Switch 2.

PostsPosted on Twitter, gaming insider Reece “Kiwi Talkz” Reilly weighed in on Nintendo’s 2D & 3D Donkey Kong comments, noting Retro continuing with the IP was “copium.” Instead, the insider claimed Retro will begin development on Metroid Prime 5 after Metroid Prime 4 is finished and released. “I am not saying they are going to become the Metroid Prime studio,” the insider clarified, and the post also noted that Retro would likely move onto another IP after Metroid Prime 5 due to “franchise fatigue.” Metroid Prime 5 was already rumored to be in development earlier in the year, when a previous leaker predicted when the supposed Nintendo Switch 2 title would launch.

One fan agreed Retro would likely develop a fifth Metroid Prime game after the fourth installment, but believed Retro would instead develop a trilogy instead of walking away. Despite most Metroid fans agreeing that the studio would move on to the fifth chapter fairly swiftly, the fandom was left confused by a recent Metroid Prime 4: Beyond ad that mistakenly stated the game was already out.
