Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds Reveals Nostalgic Freebie for Sega Fans

PrincetonGames2025-07-227620

Sega is giving away a Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds version of the Blue Star from Sonic Riders. This nostalgic freebie became available just two months ahead of Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds' multi-platform release.

First announced at the December 2024 edition of The Game Awards, CrossWorlds is the next big racing game from Sega, as well as a direct follow-up to the massively successful Team Sonic Racing, which sold 3.5 million copies between its mid-2019 release and June 2025. It is scheduled to hit the market on September 25.

As a celebration of previous Sonic racing games, Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds brings back Sonic Riders' Extreme Gear, but the execution isn't perfect.

In the run-up to this release, Sega unveiled a new freebie in the form of the Blue Star, an Extreme Gear from the classic 2006 arcade racer Sonic Riders. Sonic's hoverboard—designed by Tails in the original game's lore—is being given away to anyone who signs up for a Sega Account. The only other requirement is linking at least one platform to the account. The key here is for fans to link their profiles to a platform on which they plan to play Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds.

How To Claim Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds Blue Star

Sign up for a Sega Account Link the account with at least one platform on which Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds will be available Buy Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds Claim the Blue Star promo code via the Free Gift Promotion website between September 25 and October 31 Redeem the promo code on the platform/storefront for which it was issued

The Blue Star offer may not be available in all regions.

In a social media post announcing the promotion, Sega said that the offer is only available in select regions, albeit without elaborating on the matter. Social media reports from fans suggest that the promo is at the very least available in North America and Europe. Existing Sega Account owners who have already linked at least one gaming platform to their profile are automatically eligible for the freebie and will receive their complimentary Blue Star once Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds releases on September 25.

The Blue Star will be distributed via promo codes for the game's target platforms. Sonic fans will only be able to claim one promo code for a single platform of their choice, even if they end up buying the game on multiple storefronts. The window for grabbing a code runs between the game's September 25 release until October 31, at 10:59am ET / 16:59: CET. Buying the arcade racer during this period is a prerequisite for claiming a Blue Star code.

The Blue Star offer continues Sega's ongoing efforts to incentivize Sega Account sign-ups, following similar promotions in Shinobi: Art of Vengeance and Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii, as well as Raidou Remastered: The Mystery of the Soulless Army. The Blue Star will ostensibly be far from the only connection between Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds and Sonic Riders, as Sega's recent teasers suggest the former will heavily reference the latter.
